Dental anxiety is a relatively common fear of going to the dentist, affecting people of all ages.

In some cases, anxiety may prevent patients from having regular check-ups or necessary dental treatment, making small dental issues become worse over time.

Do you offer sedation?

Sedation may be offered to help patients with severe dental anxiety, acute sensitivity or for complex surgical dental procedures.

However, some medical conditions that require prescription drugs may be incompatible with sedation.

Talk to your dentist about sedation if you are concerned or anxious about your treatment.

We’ll give you all the information you need during your consultation appointment and take the time necessary to assess if sedation is right for you.

What happens during sedation?

Sedation can be achieved either through the inhalation of gas or injected intravenously (IV sedation) through a vein in your arm or hand.

At Ash Lane Dental Suite, IV Sedation is available.

The sedation medication makes you feel drowsy and relaxed before your treatment. These are not painkillers, and so you’ll still receive a local anaesthetic to numb the area around to be treated.

During sedation, we constantly monitor your vital signs. Sedated patients do not fall asleep but often don’t remember anything about their treatment.

When administered by a qualified dentist at the practice, sedation is a safe procedure.

However, if you are going to receive sedation, you must a designate an adult to accompany you to your appointment.

After the treatment, the designated person must stay with you until the effects of the sedation have fully worn off. This may take up to 24 hours, during which time you should not drive, operate machinery, smoke or consume alcohol.
